A customer came into our Port Richey store in late August with a simple complaint. His boat trailer had started making a low growling noise on the drive up US-19, the kind that changes pitch when the rig sways behind you. The trailer had maybe four hundred miles on it since spring.
What it had was about thirty trips backward down a ramp on the Cotee River, hot hubs first, into salt water.

Your truck and your trailer are not wearing out on the highway. They are wearing out in the last forty feet of every trip, in the few minutes your wheels are underwater.
Why the Boat Ramp Is Harder on Your Rig Than the Highway
We have written before about how salt air alone shortens brake life in this part of Florida. Immersion is a different animal.
You have towed twenty or thirty miles in Florida heat, from Trinity or Bayonet Point down to the water. Your trailer hubs are warm. Your tow vehicle’s rotors are hotter still, because you have been braking a loaded rig. Then all of that metal goes straight into cool salt water.
According to Better Boat’s boat trailer bearing guide, the sequence matters: after a highway run the hubs are warm, then the trailer gets submerged at the ramp, and if the seal is weak or the grease is already compromised, water has a chance to get where it should not. Warm metal, cool water, and a rubber seal that was never designed to be a submarine hatch.
Fresh water inside a hub is a problem. Salt water inside a hub is a countdown.

A trailer wheel bearing is a set of hardened steel rollers riding in a race, packed in grease, with a seal at the back of the hub keeping the grease in and the world out. Trailer Brake Repair in Port Richey Starts at the Waterline
Most boat rigs in this county are legally required to have working trailer brakes, and a lot of owners do not realize it.
Under Florida Statute 316.261, a trailer with a gross weight over three thousand pounds built after January 1, 1972 must have brakes acting on all wheels. Those brakes also have to apply automatically and promptly on breakaway from the tow vehicle, and stay applied for at least fifteen minutes. Drum brakes hold salt water inside the drum where you cannot see it.
Discover Boating’s guidance is to have the pads or shoes inspected every few seasons and to check the brake fluid reservoir a couple of times a season. A sudden drop in fluid is a leak, and a leak in a trailer brake system is a stop-now problem. The Tow Vehicle Takes a Hit You Never See

Lights, Connectors, and Grounds

Two habits prevent most of it:
- Keep the connector on the tow vehicle covered when you are not towing. An uncovered seven-pin plug sitting in West Pasco salt air corrodes on its own schedule.

UV radiation breaks down the rubber compounds, heat under load speeds that up, and long stationary stretches let oxygen and ozone work on the rubber while nothing at all is happening. A trailer parked uncovered in full West Pasco sun ages faster than the same trailer would in a garage up north.
The recommendations converge on a narrow window. Discover Boating cites the National Transportation Safety Board’s position that tires more than six years old should be replaced. Multi-axle trailer tires are commonly recommended for replacement every four to five years regardless of tread depth, because trailer suspensions load them harder than a car does. Andersen Hitches recommends five to six years regardless of tread condition, leaning shorter for outdoor-stored trailers. Almost every boat trailer in Pasco County is outdoor-stored.
So how do you know how old yours are? Read the DOT code on the sidewall. Since 2000, the last four digits of the Tire Identification Number give the week and the year of manufacture, with the two week digits immediately before the two year digits. A code ending 3507 means week 35 of 2007. A code ending 2119 means week 21 of 2019, which on a trailer that lives outside here means you are shopping, no matter how the tread looks.
Tire covers help, and so does keeping the tires at their rated pressure, molded into the sidewall.
Your After-Launch Rinse and Inspect Routine
None of this requires a lift or special tools. It takes ten minutes and a hose in your own driveway.
- Let the hubs cool before you back in, when you can. Cooler metal going into the water is easier on the seals.
- Rinse the trailer with fresh water as soon as you can after retrieval. Discover Boating’s advice is to rinse the trailer brakes as soon as possible after you retrieve the boat, before corrosion can start to form.
- Rinse the wheels and lug nuts too, not just the frame. A corroded lug nut is a roadside problem later.
- Rinse the tow vehicle’s rear end and wheels. It went in the water with everything else.
- Touch the hubs at your first stop on the way home. Warm is normal. One hub noticeably hotter than the others is not.
- Look at the grease through a bearing protector window, or when you pull a cap at the end of the season. Milky means water.
- Run the lights before every trip, with someone standing behind the trailer.
Symptoms That Mean Stop Towing Now
Those are maintenance. These are not. If any of the following show up, pull over before you tow another mile:
- A growl, hum, or grinding from one wheel that changes with speed. A bearing that spins roughly or grinds by hand needs immediate attention.
- One hub much hotter than the others. A bearing running hotter than its neighbors is failing.
- Play or wobble when you grab a trailer wheel top and bottom and rock it.
- Grease flung on the inside of a wheel or on the boat hull. The seal is gone.
- The trailer pushing or swaying under braking, or a tow vehicle that pulls to one side when you slow down.
- Smoke, a burning smell, or a wheel too hot to touch. That is a seizing bearing or a locked brake, and a wheel can come off the spindle.
A bearing failure at highway speed on US-19 with a boat behind you is not a repair, it is an incident.
